A weekend is enough time to see three completely different versions of San Diego County. Here are the five drives we'd build a two-day trip around, in the order we'd do them — mountain morning, mountain afternoon, a long desert day, an easy coastal Sunday, and a sunset finish.
Each one links to a full route guide with mapped stops for coffee, food, restrooms, and viewpoints, so the planning work is already done. Your only jobs are picking the car and setting the alarm.
1. Julian Backcountry — Saturday morning
Sixty miles inland to apple country: oak meadows, a mountain town at 4,200 feet, and pie that justifies the drive on its own. Leave by 8am and you'll beat the parking problem. In fall, the orchards along the way up are reason enough; the rest of the year, it's the pie.
2. Palomar Mountain — Saturday afternoon
Pair it with Julian if you want a full mountain day, or run it on its own. South Grade Road is the best-driving pavement in the county, and the view from the top — back across the valleys you just climbed — is the payoff.
3. Salton Sea Desert Art Run — the long day
The most surreal drive on our list: Salvation Mountain, Bombay Beach, and a shoreline that looks like another planet. Go in cooler months, carry water, and start early. It's the longest day here and the one people talk about longest afterward.
4. Coronado & Silver Strand — Sunday morning
Flat, easy, and photogenic. Bay on one side, ocean on the other, breakfast in Coronado village at the end. After two days of elevation, a morning where the hardest decision is pancakes versus chilaquiles is exactly right.
5. Sunset Cliffs — Sunday evening
End the weekend here. Park at Ladera Street about forty minutes before sunset, walk the bluff, then dinner in Ocean Beach. If the weekend has a headline photo, this is where you take it.
